Smalltown DJs & Grandtheft – Good People

Youtube Video Edited by Harry Walsh
Soundcloud (stream and download)
Direct Download (right click save target as)

Close your eyes and picture the cast of Hee-Haw at a massive rave – “Good People” is the soundtrack, a rollicking banjo banger. This release marks the second outing on T&A for both the Smalltown DJs and Grandtheft, following up Loving The Vibe and Gangsta Musik / Splash, respectively. Early support from Soggy Bottom Boys, the Duke Brothers, Cletus the Slack-Jawed Yokel, Barney Fife and Jeff Foxworthy.

The Good People EP comes out on January 8, 2013, with remixes from XXXChange and Nacey. XXXChange’s remix is hard as fuck, while Nacey’s is deeper and more melodic. The B-side, Stuck Here, is a tech-house floor-filler with an equally irresistible hook. The Good People tour is currently rampaging across Canada.

Smalltown DJs & Grandtheft – Good People  Full EP coming January 8.

There was something really special about the energy of the night, and boy, did shit get real in NYC less than 48 hours later. We hope all of our friends and Rub family are holding up well during the aftermath of such a storm. Enjoy the photos below, all taken by our good friend Kenny Rodriguez.

Yuna – Live Your Life (DJ Ayres & Scott Melker Remix)

My dude Sam at The Fader sent me over this Yuna track to remix, so I got in the studio with piano whiz / pop genius Scott Melker and we chefed up a halftime R&B version. With mix/master assistance by Nick Chacona. The original was produced by Pharrell, and you can get it on her self-titled debut album.

T&A Takeover in DC with Misun

I’m off to DC tonight to play with Tittsworth, Starks & Nacey and Misun.  We’re celebrating the release of Misun’s debut EP, which is free on T&A Records.   This is a very different release for us, as Misun is a female singer, and it’s a beautiful collection of songs, produced entirely by Nacey.  Download and Stream here.

OUT NOW ON T&A RECORDS!

Misun – The Sea (Free Download)

Misun – The Sea Remixes (Buy on iTunes, Beatport, Amazon, etc)

The three multifaceted band members of the DC aquawave/emo-pop band Misun (pronounced ‘me-sun’) met while working in different capacities at the Dupont Circle bar/restaurant, Science Club in 2010. At the time vocalist Misun Wojcik waitressed part-time, often sharing overlapping shifts with resident DJs William DeVon (guitar) and Nacey (production/keys). The three soon discovered a common musical bond and began writing and recording in Nacey’s bedroom studio on U Street. The band’s marine-inspired debut EP organically combines influences from folk to EDM to soul. The 6 songs are available together for free download on the T&A Records website. And the remix EP is a family affair, featuring a range of remixes from longtime friends Steve Starks, Cousin Cole, Gavin Holland, Billy the Gent, Londres and WIlliam Devon.

Throwback Thursdays: T.I.

T.I.P. feat Beanie Sigel “2 Glock 9’s” (right click “save target as”)

This came out in 2000 on Music Inspired by Shaft. First of all you can’t go wrong with a Biggie sample for your chorus, especially a hard-as-fuck Biggie gun lyric. And it’s interesting to hear T.I. hold his own over an east coast boom bap beat (produced by PA, who is actually from College Park, GA) next to Beanie Sigel in his prime. I love Tip’s early style here. Compare:

“N***a brag if you wanna, we’ll blast up your corner, the n***a ain’t fast then his ass is a goner” (2 Glock 9’s, 2000)

vs

“Your values is a disarray / prioritizing horribly / unhappy with the riches cause you’re piss poor morally” (Live Your Life, 2008)

Yes “Live Your Life” is a radio song, but I don’t have a problem with the content, didactic and preachy as it is. It’s T.I.’s cutesy polysyllabic rhymes that don’t do it for me. He’s way too close to the Rawkus style of the late 90s, EG “the church of Scientology, feminine biology, manic depressive psychologically” (I’m not making this up – Jane Doe actually rapped those words all in a row on Rock Rock Y’all). Hypothetical political lyrical miracle whip. If I want five thousand syllables per bar I’ll listen to Company Flow, otherwise give me that raw era T.I. – Rubber Band Man, What U Know and 2 Glock 9’s.

Heavy Warmup Vol 13: Morse Code

Morse Code – Heavy Warmup (Live at Sutra 6-26-09) by Dj Ayres on Mixcloud

Download here: http://www.divshare.com/download/24018698-f6c

Well a very heavy burtation on this warmup mix, as one of my favorite Californians, Morse Code throws down. This one was recorded live in NYC at Sutra in 2009. If you’re unfamiliar with Heavy Warmup, here’s the mission statement. If you’re unfamiliar with Morse Code, kill yoself. – Dayres Dairison
