Hot and fresh out the kitchen, it’s The Rub Remixed!

The Rub’s first EP of original music was released in June, and the duo (DJ Eleven and DJ Ayres) enlisted a handful of their favorite producers to remix the four songs.  Inspired by the legendary Brooklyn party, The Rub Remixed is extremely eclectic, from boom bap hip-hop to rave anthems to chill out vibes.

Marco Polo brings a 90s rap aesthetic to “Feel You,” enlisting Lil Fame from M.O.P. to add some Brooklyn grime to complement Misun’s smoky singing.  German dancehall dons So Shifty lift the Natalie Storm feature “Dutty Gyal” to high energy carnival Soca levels, while XXXChange (T&A) keeps the electro feel of the original track but raves it out.  Oakland’s Trackademicks (Fools Gold) smooths things out with his “Black & White” remix, delivering notes of  80s R&B and Bay slaps.  Michna’s (Ghostly International) “At Night” remix is deep and lo-fi, like Afrika Bambaata scoring a Michael Mann film.

Go to The Rub website to download the original The Rub EP for free along with The Rub’s brand new mix for The Fader, and don’t miss their monthly bash at The Bell House, where they are celebrating their 11 year anniversary this summer.

“This is The Rub’s first ever release of original music, with vocals from Natalie Storm, Misun, Tatiana Owens and Bigg Base. It’s super varied, from 70 BPM deep 808 vibes all the way up to 130 BPM dancehall / bass music, some soul and some rap and some pop. Kind of like a Rub party! The EP is exclusively on iTunes this week, then it will be in full release Wednesday June 19th, both for free on The Rub website and for sale on all digital outlets.

With their self-titled EP, The Rub, the duo behind the monthly party that the Village Voice deemed NYC’s best, release four new songs that, in the spirit of the party, bring the heat across genre. Although their It’s the Motherfuckin’ Remix mixtape series received praise in outlets like Spin, Pitchfork, and MTV, The Rub EP is the group’s first release of original music.

Where opener “Feel You” places D.C. singer Misun over an electronic soul track worthy of Portishead, “Dutty Gal” (featuring Natalie Storm) increases the BPMs and lowers the bass, delivering a peak hour electro-dancehall rattler in the vein of DJ Zinc and Major Lazer. “Black & White,” meanwhile, is a radio-ready NYC rap track with hard verses from Bronx newcomer Bigg Base and a big hook from Tatiana Owens, and instrumental closer “At Night” offers uneasy late night ambience with deep bass and rolling 808s that recall the work of producers like SBTRKT and Ryan Hemsworth.

In the coming weeks expect a Fader mix, a remix EP (mid July), and more sweaty nights at The Rub, where DJs Ayres and Eleven will keep you dancing early into the morning (every last Saturday at the Bell House).”

Throwback Thursday: Houston For Dvmmies

DJ Ayres & JD – Houston Tape by Dj Ayres on Mixcloud

JD and I recorded this tape at the height of the Houston rap invasion (2004/2005), when the biggest songs on the radio all over the US were Slim Thug, Paul Wall, Mike Jones and Chamillionaire. We looked back at the history of Houston rap (and a little Port Arthur), digging into JD’s deep crates and selecting the absolute best jams. Matt Sonzala and Roxy Cottontail hosted a big Houston rap show during CMJ that year, where we got access to a bunch of the rappers for drops. RIP H.A.W.K.

Edits

It’s been a long time since I put up mashups or edits, but I never stopped making them. Here are a bunch, which if you’ve heard me play in the last year, you’ve heard me play. Mostly just cute little intros and outros.  Click on the Divshare logo to download.

NORE x Macklemore – Nothin / Thrift Shop (DJ Ayres Clean Edit)
get the dirty version here

Claptone – Wrong (Ayres’s Tempo Edit to Dr. Dre “Still D.R.E.”)

A$AP Rocky – Fuckin Problem (Ayres’s 99 Problems Intro Edit)

Meek Mill – House Party (Ayres’s Bathroom Intro Edit)

Drake ft. Lil Wayne – The Motto (Ayres’s Becky Edit)
the echo at the end is at 80 BPM because I made this to drop Big Sean – Dance (A$$) right after it.

Rihanna ft. Kanye West x M83 – Diamonds (Ayres’s Midnight Mash)
And some older ones that never made it to Soundcloud or Crooklyn Clan:

M.I.A. – Paper Planes (Ayres’s Accapella In N Out Edit)

Earth Wind And Fire – September (Ayres’s Brooklyn Intro Edit)

Mobb Deep – Shook Ones (Ayres’s Accapella Edit)

Throwback Thursday: Space ‘N Faders

DJ Ayres – Space ‘N Faders by Dj Ayres on Mixcloud

This one is important to me for a few reasons: it was the first mixtape I made which Turntable Lab agreed to sell, which I think dates it around 2000.  Scott at Ten Deep did the art.  I remember I was asked to DJ an eighties party in like 1998 and I didn’t have enough eighties vinyl so I borrowed a crate from my friend Eli (aka Photocall); from then on I was hooked, and started building up my own collection, mostly digging at the flea markets in Chelsea. Spinbad’s eighties tapes were also hugely influential; I bit a bunch of these songs from his Rock The Casbah tapes and from DJ Red Alert when he was on the old school at noon on Hot 97. If memory serves, I recorded this one live straight onto a Sony CD recorder. Tracklist: Read the rest of this entry »

Throwback Thursday: History of Hip-Hop 1993

I’ve decided to throw a classic mixtape on my web log every Thursday, and I needed a truly original name for the series, so I came up with Throwback Thursdays.  I hope the name isn’t taken!

This is one I did for The Rub History of Hip-Hop series, and it just landed in the top ten Best of Mixcloud 2012, even though I mixed it in 2008 and the music is all from 1993.  So it’s like wearing a throwback over another throwback.  Way back!  Back into time.

I was 17 in 1993 and I have very fond memories of driving around in a Chrysler listening to tapes by the Beatnuts, Alkoholiks, Tribe Called Quest, Das EFX, Ice Cube, etc etc.  TBH I feel like Hip-Hop History 1994 was a stronger mix, but 1993 has way more streams, so I assume somebody famous tweeted about it or something.  But the entire History of Hip-Hop series is awesome, with one mix per year from 1979-2009 mixed by Cosmo, Eleven or me, and can be found here and here.
